Fall Decor Not So Literal

Every time I decorate for fall I literally repeat the same motions, bring out the halloween/fall box, proceed to put out pumpkins, anything orange, and anything to do with nature. This year I'm trying a not so literal approach that if done properly, I can use in the spring as well.

Below you'll see a fall color scheme that can easily be used until Thanksgiving and brought back again in the springs. This split complementary color scheme of blue, orange, and red from the color wheel can be used in the fall, and then simple delete some of the red items in the spring and summer. Blue is one of my favorite decorating colors and a lot of people think you can't use it in the fall since its a cool color but that is just not true.

Here is some of my fall inspiration this year.

Different hues of blues, reds and oranges just look sooooooo good together. Don't be afraid to invest in some orange or blue furniture. Blue furniture especially looks awesome during the Christmas season as well, just throw in a little silver and gold! Paint and rugs also have a huge impact on a room and people tend to play it safe in these areas, myself included.

In this simple idea board you can incoporate a few items into your fall decor that will have a huge impact on the overall room especially when it comes to texture which is perfect for fall.

1. Gather Pillows: These inexpensive pillows can add that touch of "fall" to your room and can be purchased at Target.com

2. Tribal Printed Pillows: Bringing in some bold colors and patterns on your pillows are an easy way to implement these colors into your room without being so literally. These can also be used all year long, these pillows are a tiny splurge at Onekingslane.com

3. Copper is huge right now and brings in the perfect texture and shine for fall and even through the Christmas season. Find these items at places like Target, Pier One and Overstock.com

4. Hyde rugs can bring a ton of texture to your room which fall is all about! Don't worry about swapping out your rug, simply layer this Rug on top of your existing one.

5. Bold Chairs have huge impact on rooms. Invest in your favorite color whether its blue, orange or yellow and decorate around it.

6. Gold can easily be used throughout the year. I like to make sure I repeat item finishes at least one other time in a room. This gold lamp from West Elm will play off the copper nicely, you can also purchase less expensive versions right now at Target.

7. Cotton adds an amazing texture and warmth to your space for fall or summer. Invest in some high quality pieces from Magnolia or attempt to make your own.

All in all, we don't have to take fall decor so literal, especially if some of us are minimalists. Of course, if you have kids, you may want to bring out the pumpkins, bats, skulls etc. because its just too much fun am I right?
